My cell phone contract is finished. Any advice on switching to a card or prepaid plan?

I don't need a new phone and don't want to start another contract. Most months I don't use all 45 minutes available on my current plan, rarely I go way over. I want to ';pay as you go'; but don't want to drop my service until I'm sure I have something that works and I don't want to change my phone number. I use to have Virgin Mobile prepay when the company first launched in the US. I dont have any complaints, and the service was excellent. The process was very simple and direct; just buy a card, put in the code, and keep talking.
